What essential oils can I use for traveling sickness for my children and myself?

There are so many people traveling these days and it is very common to have discomfort on an airplane, car or ship. It is very easy to use essential oils in a situation like this, for yourself and your child.

Travel/sea sickness: caused by movement of the vehicle /boat/airplane, affecting the organ of balance in the inner ear. Reading for the length of time whilst the vehicle is moving often triggers carsickness. May also be a conditioned reflex, if you expect to feel sick, you are more likely to be sick.

When flying makes you anxious, have ready a tissue with one drop Lavender essential oil and one drop Geranium essential oil in a little plastic bag in your pocket/handbag. When you are beginning to feel uneasy take out the tissue and hold it to your nose for a moment. Take a sniff, lie back, close your eyes and relax.

Children on long flights can get fidgety and irritable. Have ready a small bottle containing 15 drops Chamomile essential oils in 2 tablespoons of any vegetable oil. When things start to get out of control, twist the child around on the seat so you can massage his legs and feet with the oil. Tuck him on and he will soon settle down.

Before traveling:
For the younger child, add one drop Lavender essential oil and 1 drop Geranium essential oil to a small amount of vegetable oil, and put it in the bath. It will float, and can be collected in the hands and massaged into the child’s skin.

During the flight:
Take with you a prepared mix of 5 drops each Chamomile, Lavender and Geranium essential oil, diluted in one-ounce vegetable oil. A younger child will allow you to massage a little of this into their feet, while for the older children, place 2 drops Lavender oil onto a tissue and place it behind them on the seat. Both methods help calm them down.

Motion sickness Mix:
10 drops Ginger
4 drops Peppermint
2 drops Eucalyptus Radiate
2 drops Coriander

Dilute 2 drops of the mixture in one-teaspoon vegetable oil and rub a small amount over the child’s back and abdomen before the journey starts.

And the most common oil for nausea is just simply inhaling Peppermint essential oil from a tissue. It works wonders!
